New coach saves sinking Drifters

Shoko acted swiftly to the club’s poor showing and approached Mabusela, who came from Limpopo and managed to turn things around for the Zandspruit side.

Golden Drifter Football Club president, Proud Shoko, will forever be grateful to his SAB coach, Mahlatsi Mabusela, who saved his side from relegation.

Mabusela took over as head coach of the struggling side in January, at the start of the second leg of the SAB League, after the side had lost 10 games in the first half of their debut season.

Shoko acted swiftly to the club’s poor showing and approached Mabusela, who came from Limpopo and managed to turn things around for the Zandspruit side.

“I was approached by Shoko after he saw my credentials as a coach. After watching two games, I was not happy with the club’s way of play. I was also not happy to see the only SAB side in Muldersdrift go down the drain,” he said.

After signing on the dotted line, Mabusela said he restructured the club and brought in about nine players, some from his previous teams, to rescue the club.

“I coached 13 games and the team won eight, drew one and lost four,” the coach said.

The club finished the season with 34 points at ninth position, having played 28 games, of which they won 10, lost 14 and drew four.

When asked about his future with the club, Mabusela explained that he’d had a meeting with Shoko, who was still happy with his services at the club. “They were happy with my services and we are already preparing for the next season,” he said.

He also added that the vision for next year is for him to win the league with the side and win the playoffs to guarantee them a spot in the ABC Motsepe League, a league two stages away from the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

“The club did very well under the difficult circumstances and conditions of the league. Our players gave their all in our debut season, which the club views as a successful season,” Shoko said about the season.
