Sector 3 crime patterns tabled

At the meeting, various crime stats or/ and trends for the sector were discussed.

The Honeydew Sector 3 Community Policing Forum recently held its monthly meeting, at which the crime patterns for the previous months were tabled.

The following crime stats or/ and trends for the sector were discussed:

The sector saw a decrease in hijackings and house break-ins; however, it was revealed that hijackings mainly took place on a Monday, and motorists were reminded to be aware of their surroundings when leaving their properties.

An increase in house robbery (when people are at home) was seen as a problem, with these incidents usually occurring on a Thursday during the day, between 8am to 2pm, and especially between 11.30am and 12.45pm.

“Please educate domestic workers and children (even teenagers) not to let ‘workmen’ (or anyone) onto the property. There are reports are of an Isuzu or Toyota bakkie with two or three male occupants hooting at gates, wanting to gain access to check DSTV or to do work. Please keep security gates locked and make sure everyone, including domestic workers, knows where the panic button is,” Honeydew Police Sector 3 manager Captain Karen Jacobs advised.

Karen also issued a caution about theft of and out of motor vehicles, which has increased, especially on Saturdays. “Toyota bakkies are still high risk. Please ensure you lock your car and close your windows,” she warned.

Johannesburg Metro Police Department Superintendent, Wandile Mrubata, warned against supporting casual workers and beggars.

“Please avoid using workers standing on street corners. Rather get a referral or someone you know. Also, please do not support beggars at traffic lights by giving them money or food. They will move to another area if they don’t get anything. Sadly, what they do has become an organised business,” he said.
