‘Witpoortjie-ians’ are great!

Let Witpoortjie become the greatest place again

When I planted my roots in Witpoortjie 25 years ago, I thought to myself, “Wow, what a great place to stay!”

In Witpoortjie, it is rumoured – tongue in cheek – that if you know somebody, that somebody will know somebody else that will know somebody else that is related to you … or to somebody that you know. True story!

I’ve only experienced love, friendship and kindness in the community. But lately … there’s something wrong. The ‘Witpoortjie-ians’ are very rude, unfriendly and disobedient of basic traffic rules. I noticed the other day a man swearing at an elderly lady at the Pick n Pay complex because she was taking too long exiting a parking space. Daily I see people skipping traffic lights, stop signs or getting irritated if somebody is driving too slow in front of them. Where has the love gone?

The Bible – or as I call it: “The Manual of being a civilized human” – states that you must do for others just what you want them to do for you. My take on it is that you must treat other people as you would like to be treated yourself. Do you love yourself? Do you want to be treated with respect, kindness and dignity? Then why treat other people the way you don’t want to be treated yourself? Love is after all the greatest commandment according to the Bible!

‘Witpoortjie-ians’, stop what you’re doing. Take a deep breath, look around you and find your love again. Let Witpoortjie become the greatest place again. Love is all around us, come on and let it show!
