Councillor explains reasons for major sewer line blockages

According to Leah, part of the camera investigation referred mainly to fatty deposits in the sewer line close to Nic Diederichs Road, behind the complexes in Wilgeheuwel.

MMC for Economic Development and Ward 97 councillor, Leah Knott, has released a report pertaining to an investigation about sewer line blockages in the area.

Leah produced a camera investigation report which provided insight into the cause of the problematic blockages in the ward.

The inspection was conducted by Johannesburg Water, according to a report by the MMC.

According to Leah, part of the camera investigation referred mainly to fatty deposits in the sewer line close to Nic Diederichs Road, behind the complexes in Wilgeheuwel.

“This has been the major cause of the blockages and bad smells upstream. The fatty deposits are believed to emanate from the Retail Crossing Shopping Centre,” she explained.

She added that the Department of Environmental Health has been requested to investigate how the restaurants and food outlets are managing the disposal of the fats they use.

Part of the investigation also focused on the recent blockages at the Wilgeheuwel Extreme Park.

Leah elaborated on the problems there. “This is the same sewer line that is supplying Florin Street, although it falls on the other side of Nic Diederichs Road. Johannesburg Water discovered that the line connects to an outfall line at a 90 degree angle. They believe that this has been the cause of various blockages inside the park recently.”

“The resolution is to reduce the angle of the connection to the outfall line and to construct a new manhole. Excavation of this has started already, using the ‘as and when’ contractors available to Johannesburg Water,” Leah concluded.
