5-a-side tournament welcomes hundreds of players

The tournament was gifted some perfect weather for the day.

Panorama Football Club’s indoor soccer courts played host to 88 Events’ 5-a-Side Tournament on Saturday, 13 April, after the initial date had to be changed due to bad weather the previous week.

The tournament was originally scheduled to be held on 6 April, but that was unfortunately the weekend when Friday, 5 April saw a massive storm hit Roodepoort, which meant the courts were flooded and unusable. However, the following week, the weather played along perfectly and 88 Events was able to hold the tournament on Saturday, 13 April.

The tournament kicked off at about 10am, with the teams taking part in an initial group stage round robin where the games were a straight 15 minutes one way. The Round of 16 thereafter followed the same format, while the quarterfinals and semifinals got a little longer as the games became 15 minutes each way, meaning the full length of the game was 30 minutes.

Eventually, the day’s hard work came down to two teams in the final – Football Flavour and Ajax, who had to play 20 minutes per half to determine who the winner would be. At the end of the 40 minutes, it was Football Flavour that emerged victorious, as they defeated Ajax 7–2 to lift the trophy.
