Councillors in Roodepoort have advised registered voters who may not make it to a voting station on Election Day (8 May) to apply for a special vote.
According to the Independent Election Board (IEC), a special vote allows a registered voter who can’t vote at his or her voting station on Election Day, to apply to vote on a predetermined day before Election Day.
Ward 84 councillor, Gert Niemand, elaborated on this opportunity. “This is for anyone that wants to cast a special vote because of the following reasons – working on Election Day, going away or being bed-ridden. This application is made at the IEC or online,” he explained.
He added that the special voting also includes Vote by Home Visit, where IEC officials pay the applicant who may be disabled or pregnant visit.
He said that the application period is open from 4 to 18 April.
Special voting is set to take place on Monday, 6 May and Tuesday, 7 May 2019, as per the election timetable.
Ward 97 PR councillor, Ralf Bittkau, also weighed-in by guiding interested residents on how to go about applying for the special vote.
He said the application can be done online at https://www.elections.org.za, by SMSing your ID number to 32249, or by visiting a local IEC office.
