Careless driving on Albert Street

“Cars don’t stop and children are at risk of being knocked over if this behaviour continues,” Dave vented.

The total disregard for traffic laws on Albert Street in Weltevreden Park has again raised eyebrows near the local school.

The Panorama Residents Association chairperson, Dave Baxter, complained about the motorists ignoring the stop sign between Mostertboom Street and Albert Road, outside Panorama Primary School.

“Cars don’t stop and children are at risk of being knocked over if this behaviour continues,” Dave vented.

The school has also previously raised this concern, saying that the area is at its most dangerous during the morning and afternoon peak hours.

Ward 89 councillor, Amelia Bester, said driver behaviour is the problem in this case. “Driver behaviour and disregard for the rule of law is a difficult thing to change or influence. The starting point is self-respect, respect for others and for your environment,” she said.

She added that visible policing would make a difference, “… but while we await the completion of training of the 1 500 new JMPD officials, resources do not allow for it”.

Region C superintendent, Wandile Mrubata, also previously cited manpower as a problem, alluding to the fact that officers cannot be deployed everywhere.

Dave also complained about the lack of action just a block away from the school, at the intersection between Albert Street and Haak en Steek Street/ Cornish Avenue after petitioning for a stop sign or road circle to alleviate traffic issues.

Amelia responded to this issue by saying, “Traffic calming for that intersection was approved through the IDP process. We await installation”.
