The Roodepoort Police performed special operation duties, including stops-and-searches in and around the Roodepoort precinct, which yielded great results.
The operations took place from 22 to 28 March, and 54 suspects, aged between 19 and 59 years, were arrested on various charges; possession of drugs, theft, shoplifting, assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, common assault and malicious injury to property (under the Domestic Violence Act 116 of 1998), intimidation, housebreaking, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, armed robbery, house robbery, driving under the influence of alcohol, business robbery, dealing in counterfeit goods, sexual assault, rape, murder and fraud.
All suspects were charged and detained at the Roodepoort Police Station. They will appear in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court soon.
According to Captain Juanita Yorke, the Roodepoort Police spokesperson, two of the cases warranted special mention, and she said, “The suspect in the murder case was identified and pointed out by a witness, where after detective Sergeant Mohale made the arrest. We applaud the detectives for their long hours of hard work and dedication to bring the suspects to book.”
The other was the fraud case, and Yorke said, “The suspect was arrested for a Roodepoort fraud case, but could also be linked to other cases in Hillcrest, Lenasia, Linden, Durban, Cape Town and Sophiatown.” She added that the suspect posed as a travel agent and booked flights and accommodation for people to holiday destinations worldwide. After receiving the victims’ payments, the suspect disappeared.
“We are urging anyone with further information, or who has also been defrauded, to visit their nearest police station and report the matter,” Yorke concluded.
