Speakers earn well-deserved victories

A number of participants owned the stage as they battled it out in a bid to earn the top spots while also improving their public speaking and presentation skills.

Writing and delivering a speech in front of an audience can be accompanied by a number of challenges.

However, this does not seem to be the case for the experienced Bacon and Egg Toastmasters members who competed in the speech contest held on Saturday, 2 March.

The Barefoot Country Restaurant at the Ngwenya Country Village in Muldersdrift was host to another monthly Toastmasters event which was slightly different from the norm, because of the speech contest.

A number of participants owned the stage as they battled it out in a bid to earn the top spots while also improving their public speaking and presentation skills.

After the participation, a panel of judges finalised their scores and the winners were announced. Lucinda Harman, who delivered a speech entitled ‘Life’s Greatest Lesson’ walked tall after claiming first prize for the prepared Speech and Table topics. Another first prize victory went to Shaun Goodbrand who claimed the top spot for the Evaluations category. Lucinda expressed her joy about winning – “This is my first contest, I’ve only been with Toastmasters for eight months – my big dream is my TEDx speech which is coming up, hopefully before the end of the year,” she said, adding that the win was one in the right direction for her.

The win also meant she will be competing at the Area S2 contest in Randburg on 23 March. “It’s one step higher and I’m looking forward to the next challenge. It’s not going to be easy and I need to step up my game a little bit because there will be top speakers coming through from other clubs,” she explained.
