Witpoortjie couple helping the community with new project
Get rid of those things you no longer need
A couple from Witpoortjie, Delton and Lee-Ann Cory, started a new community project recently and want everybody to join them.
Delton explained, “The project is called Free Cycle SA and the main purpose thereof is to give the community the opportunity to get rid of things they no longer use around the house or business by giving it to someone that might need it – for free.”
He added that the rules are quite simple, and said, “We have a Facebook page where people join. As soon as you have joined, you then post an unwanted item, which can be anything from old baby clothes to electronics to ornaments. The poster then receives a credit and is allowed to request an item for him- or herself. If a posted item remains unclaimed for a long time, it can then be donated to a charity organisation.”
Delton said that this not only starts friendships among community members, but also starts a support system, “But, most of all, it is a lot of fun!”
And, even though they are based in Witpoortjie, this does not mean that only members from this specific community can join. “Because it is a social media page, it stretches to all surrounding areas and we have already received requests from the Northwest to join, resulting in areas being linked to each other,” said Delton.
The project is still small, since it was launched only a month ago, but Delton believes that, if the community joined hands by joining the group and pushing the idea forward, it will be a huge success, “As we grow, we will be running competitions to motivate people to be active and join in on the fun, laughs and conversation.”
