SPCA relieves horse’s pain

'The decision was taken to euthanise the horse'

The Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp SPCA inspectors recently encountered another horrific case of animal cruelty, this time leading to the animal being euthanised.

Mandy Cattanach, the Manager of the Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp SPCA, explained. “Our inspectors received a complaint regarding an emaciated horse in the Randfontein area. When they arrived at the property in question, they found a gelded bay horse, which was not only emaciated, but also covered in ticks with open, weeping wounds on its back.”

She added that the owner was not on site at the time of the inspectors’ visit, forcing them to return the following day. “He was issued with a written warning to obtain a veterinarian’s report on the horse. After numerous attempts from the inspector to contact the owner about this report failed, a warrant was obtained and the horse confiscated,” Cattanach said.

Unfortunately the transportation of the horse did not go well and he collapsed in the horse box. “Due to the horse’s poor condition, he was unable to get up in the box. His legs just did not have the strength to lift him. We attempted to transport him back to the SPCA lying down, but he began to panic, kicking and injuring SPCA staff and himself.

The decision was taken to humanely euthanise him to prevent him from injuring himself further,” said Cattanach.

She confirmed that a case of animal cruelty has been opened against the owner of the horse.
