In a recent media statement, the MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services, councillor Nico de Jager stated that City Power is aware of the ongoing outages that plague certain areas of Johannesburg.
“We apologise for the continued discomfort that our residents are experiencing as a result of the ongoing power outages,” he said.
According to him, these outages increased after the last round of load-shedding, which in itself has disastrous effects to the vulnerable infrastructure. In addition, the underground cables in the areas are old and brittle as a result of age and are therefore likely to fail.

City Power has however committed to investigating areas that experience frequent power outages with a view to raising projects where capital investment may be needed for repairs or replacement.
In the meantime, the entity’s technicians are working around the clock to ensure that residents have a continued supply of electricity.
Councillor De Jager also mentioned that the R133 million Roosevelt substation refurbishment is progressing according to schedule, and should be complete by September 2019. Once this upgrade is complete, a new 88 kilovolt line feeding from the Delta Substation will provide greater redundancy and will stabilise the network for the next 20 years.
“We apologise for the frustration these outages cause residents and assure them that it is receiving our full attention. Technicians are working hard to ensure that power is restored,” he said.
