Illegal taxi rank endangering pedestrians
Although there is an official taxi rank in 5th Avenue, it is not clear why it is not being used.
A long-time resident of Roodepoort North is concerned about a mini illegal taxi rank that has mushroomed in front of his house and those of others nearby.
On 25 February, the 70-year-old, who wants to stay anonymous out of a real fear of retaliation, told the Record about the taxi rank that sprang up about two weeks ago. Although there is an official taxi rank in 5th Avenue, it is not clear why it is not being used. At first the culprits parked on one side of the Harry Brown Park but were chased away by the Metro Police. They simply moved to the other side but were once again chased away.

It was then that they decided to use the pavement between the complainant’s house and the traffic lights at the intersection of Paul Kruger and 5th Avenues by parking on the pavement. This not only endangers other motorists, it’s a hazard for pedestrians, especially learners, who now are forced to bypass the taxis by walking in the road. Furthermore they create a noise nuisance and park in front of home owners’ gates.
The Record is currently in the process of obtaining comment from various stakeholders including the JMPD.
