The City of Johannesburg’s water utility, Johannesburg Water, and City Power have partnered to ensure that residents do not have to face simultaneous water cuts and load-shedding.
According to theMMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services, councillor Nico de Jager, when load-shedding of four or more hours is experienced, some areas will have water shortages or low water pressure. This is because Johannesburg Water uses electricity to pump water from the reservoir into the towers.
“We are in the process of putting in place mobile generators to assist during these outages. But we still encourage residents to ensure they have enough water at hand to last the duration of an outage. I have met with management of both Johannesburg Water and City Power to negotiate ways that will assist in minimising the impact on water towers when load-shedding is implemented,” he said.
Johannesburg Water is to communicate with City Power when water levels are running low at certain towers. City Power will then ensure that the power supply is restored to that specific area.
Nico also mentioned that Johannesburg Water is committed to providing a sustainable water and sanitation supply to all residents of the City. He said further that Level 1 water restrictions are still in place and will be enforced. Residents who contravene the Water Services By-laws will be fined.
Residents are urged to report non-compliance to the JMPD 24/7 hotline on 011 758 9650.
