ProTouch ropes in Calvin Beneke for 2019 cycling season

Despite a difficult 2015 season, Calvin has enjoyed relatively positive success in his cycling career thus far.

After getting a glimpse of ProTouch Cycling when riding with them at the 2018 Tour du Rwanda, Calvin Beneke has now signed with them for the 2019 season.

Twenty-seven-year-old Calvin got his big break on the cycling scene as a 20-year-old in 2012 when he had the chance to cycle as part of the UCI Continental Team MTN Team Qhubeka. Calvin’s hard work throughout 2012 paid off when he won the South African U/23 National Championship to earn a further two months on tour with Team Qhubeka in Europe.

His career would continue to sky-rocket in 2013 when he won the South African National Time Trial Championships, and going into 2014 when he signed with Team Europcar. His time with Europcar in 2014 was fruitful as he finished fourth overall in the Cape Town Cycle Tour, as well as second in both the Fast One Classic and Emperor’s Classic.

The following year was a tough one for Calvin as he joined Team Raleigh Britain, but failed to earn any major Top 10 finishes in 2015. He returned to his best in 2016 when he signed with Team Luso South Africa and earned himself two stage wins as well as a General Classification second place on the Mpumalanga Tour.

Calvin moved to yet another outfit in 2017 when he rode for Team Telkom and BCX Cycling, but both were fruitful as he won Stage 5 as well as the overall Sprinters Classification of the Tour of Nambia before finishing second in the 947 Cycle Challenge. Last year was a busy yet positive year for Calvin, as he had yet another strong showing at the Mpumalanga Tour, finishing fifth overall and winning the Sprinters Classification, while also finishing second in the Berge en Dale race.

Calvin now takes yet another step in his cycling career as he has now signed on with one of South Africa’s fastest growing cycling outfits, Honeydew-based ProTouch Cycling. ProTouch has gone through a monumental year and a bit, finally becoming a UCI Continental Team in 2019. Calvin immediately joined ProTouch’s Continental outfit for the trip to Rwanda for the 2019 Tour du Rwanda, as he did last year.
