The time of the eagles is once again around the corner

We are only just over a month away from the beginning of the breeding season.

To some it might seem like only yesterday that Makatsa and Thulane’s latest offspring, Ithemba, left the nest, but for the BEPR, time for the next one is around the corner.

Breeding season usually rolls around in April for the eagles, and last year the latest addition to their family was laid in late April/ early May, with the eaglet eventually hatching in mid-June. Ithemba, as it was officially named, finally fledged the nest in September and officially left the area in mid to late December.

While Ithemba’s time to shine has come and gone, it is now time to begin looking ahead towards the new breeding season which is little over a month away for Makatsa and Thulane. As said by the Black Eagle Project Roodekrans’ Johann van den Berg, “Time waits for no one, and before we can wipe our eyes, it is time to prepare duty rosters, get everyone motivated, and get things in order to start monitoring the magnificent breeding couple of our beloved Black Eagles”.

Johann also pointed out that we are still in the very, very early stages, and that there are loads of interesting, pertinent questions to be answered by the eagles. “Which nest are they going to use this year? Is it going to be the same one as last year, are they going to build a new nest, or are they going to surprise us and rebuild the nest next to the waterfall?” he said. While many a question will remain unanswered for the time being, he reminded us that the decision lies with Makatsa at the end of the day.

“These are all exciting questions, and slowly but surely the anticipation builds up amongst us, but in the end, the decision lies with Makatsa. You know the best place to raise yet another youngster, our Grand Lady.”
