The head of the Metro Police, David Thembe, has announced that the City of Johannesburg will reintroduce speed cameras.
The cameras will be automatic, not manual, and similar to those seen at traffic lights. According to Thembe, the reasoning behind the reintroduction is not to add money to the city’s coffers but to reduce the death toll on the roads. A breakdown of the Metro Police’s traffic infringement related arrests for January reveals that 557 arrests were made with driving under the influence the biggest culprit. Roodepoort is also number one for reckless and negligent driving.
