Today in History: Namibia’s constitution was adopted
Namibia's Constitution was seen as most progressive in its day.

On this day in 1990, the Namibian Constitution, which was written by an elected constituent assembly, was adopted, a month prior to Namibia’s independence from apartheid South Africa,
The acceptance of the Namibian Constitution established the Republic of Namibia.
The independence of Namibia can be traced to an accord agreed upon by Cuba, Angola and South Africa.
The reason that these particular parties were instrumental in Namibia’s independence is that Namibia was a protectorate of South Africa from 1920 until 1990, under the name of South West Africa. This meant that South African laws applied to Namibia. These included the laws designed to entrench white minority rule, as well as enforce the apartheid regime.
After years of internal uprisings, which culminated in the Battle of Cuito Carnivale, the numerous cross-border incursions conducted by the various parties involved, ceased, and Namibia, by mutual agreement between the parties concerned, attained its independence.
