Following the complaints about the incomplete upgrades of the Panorama Pikitup Garden Site, Muzi Mkhwanazi, the entity’s spokesperson, updated the Northsider on the progress.
Residents surrounding the Allen’s Nek area raised their concerns over the lack of upgrade operations on the garden site, claiming that its long closure had encouraged people to dump their waste on neighbouring properties.
Mkhwanazi clarified what was seen as ‘no progress’ regarding the upgrades. “The upgrades are effected in two phases. The first phase was completed in September last year and included the construction of a guard house, change rooms, an office, storage compartments and sorting facilities. He added that the upgrades are meant to make it easier for residents to recycle waste.
He communicated that the second phase is due to commence on 1 March, and will include the paving of the entire garden site and the construction of a perimeter wall.
“It is anticipated that the site will be completed in June and operational in August this year,” Mkhwanazi confirmed.
While the site remains a no-go area, the residents are still up in arms about the dumping that takes place outside the garden site.

The Sienna Complex chairperson, Bev Bonnett, commented on the dumping taking place on the vacant properties to the closure of the site. “It has become increasingly frustrating living in our area (Allen’s Nek and surrounds) and the Pikitup area. It is beyond disgraceful. There is illegal dumping and the residents of the area are forced to live in this mess.
“We have seen little progress with the upgrade of the Pikitup property. This has resulted in our complexes being at risk due to the overgrown pieces of land,” she stressed, adding that they have already had several fires in the last couple of years which posed a threat to their properties.
Mkhwanazi responded that Pikitup had provided an alternative site for recyclers. “Pikitup has provided an alternative temporary garden site which is situated 300m away from the Panorama garden site in Phil Allen Street, off Jim Fouché Road. Furthermore, notices were issued to residents, and councillors were informed about the existence of the temporary garden site. The security personnel at the Panorama site also direct residents to the alternative site,” he explained. In an attempt to curb illegal dumping, Mkhwanazi advised residents to report illegal dumpers to the JMPD if they witness such dumping.
