A new illegal activity, apparently based on the movie Fight Club, has allegedly hit the streets of Florida.
One film website describes Fight Club as follows in their short synopsis of the film: “Two bored men form an underground club with strict rules and fight other men who are fed up with their mundane lives”. The movie, starring Brad Pitt and Edward Norten, has acquired cult status across the world.
Sources differ as to the nature of the local version. In a short video interview with one participant, a voice could be heard instructing the fighter on the rules, which allegedly boil down to “boxing only” and “the first fighter to go down loses”.

It is also alleged that it was youngsters who participated in the most recent event which took place on 31 January in Fifth Avenue. Furthermore, it is said that the organisers went as far as closing off the street.
Some versions claim that the fighters uses boxing gloves while others say it is plain old bare-knuckle street brawling. It is also alleged that spectators bet on the outcome of the fights
The chairperson of Florida CPF, Riaz Jogee, told the Record that he was aware of the event and is currently “engaging with the organisers”. He said that the organisers want to find premises to “legitimise” the fighting. Jogee also said he wanted to make it clear that neither he, nor the CPF condones the activity.
Florida Police spokesperson, Captain Lydia Dikolomelo, said she is aware of the fad and will first investigate it before commenting.
