Councillors cannot escalate unreported problems

“Councillors are not a mechanism for bypassing the City's reporting structures and cannot instruct entities as they perform oversight duties, so please log all issues and escalate if not resolved within the relevant turnaround time,” she explained in a Facebook post.

In many instances, residents tend to think ward councillors have the power to make service delivery problems disappear or be resolved instantly.

However, this misconception was addressed by the MMC for Economic Development and Ward 97 councillor, Leah Knott, who detailed the escalation procedure for service delivery issues.

“Councillors are not a mechanism for bypassing the City’s reporting structures and cannot instruct entities as they perform oversight duties, so please log all issues and escalate if not resolved within the relevant turnaround time,” she explained in a Facebook post.

She further explained that all service delivery issues must be logged first and if not resolved, use the following format: Name, cellphone number, street address, reference number, date logged and description of the problem to escalate to the councillor afterwards.
