Florida swimmers keep club’s name high at championships

They brought a total of 27 medals home

Gauteng Aquatics Championships and finished seventh on the medal table.

Tracey Hemphill, one of the club’s coaches, said, “This event is the highlight of the age group calendar, and is major preparation for the national and regional championships coming up in March and April. The team had participants in every age group, showing good depth and potential for the future. The swimmers managed to bring home a total of 27 medals – seven gold, eight silver and 12 bronze. That is almost one medal per swimmer, which we believe is a fantastic ratio and result for our club.”

Approximately 700 swimmers participating in the championships, and Tracey said, “We are exceptionally proud of these swimmers and the phenomenal team performance put up by all our athletes.”

She added that a special mention had to be made of the U/16 boys team, who were unbeaten in the Freestyle relays, with Blake Godfrey, Johan de Jong, Joshua Honniball and Danyal van der Schyff dominating the 4 x 50m, 4 x 100m and 4 x 200m events during the competition.
