Groundbreaking year ahead for Roodepoort Rugby Club
Poorte will be without club stalwart Byron Godfrey this year however, as he has hung up his boots to focus on his family life.
After a monumental 2018, Roodepoort Rugby Club once again has big plans to expand the club even further in the year that lies ahead.
Last year saw Poorte fight back from near-relegation in 2017, to finishing as the highest-placed club in the Pirates Grand Challenge, losing narrowly to North West University in the final of the competition.
It was also the year that saw the club move to a new home ground at Ruimsig Stadium, where they have also aided immensely in terms of the upkeep of the stadium and the field in particular.
In 2019, they are looking to upgrade the stadium once again, with a focus on the fields their priority. Two of the outer fields will be focused on in particular, and will be restored and maintained for the club’s two junior sides to make use of in future. The club’s big plans aren’t limited to the infrastructure however, as they have announced that they will be putting together an official women’s rugby team for the first time.
The women’s team has already begun training, with the group coming together on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays at 6.30pm at Ruimsig Stadium for training. They have the same same practice days and times as the senior men’s rugby, while the junior rugby players practise on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Allen Glen High School at 6.30pm.
According to the president of the club, Roxy Roux, they have a strong group of players turning out at training this year, which shows good promise for what lies ahead this year. “I’m really looking forward to the year – the bunch of guys we have at training every week looks really good,” Roxy said.
Roxy also made special mention of the new players who have joined the club, stating that the club now includes players who have previously played for Griquas, Boland, and the SWD Eagles, while a few players have left other clubs to join Poorte.
