Four of Maragon Ruimsig’s matrics ended their lengthy tenures at the school in 2018, with two having spent 12 years, and two 13 years at the school.
Kyle McTaggart and Nicole Phillips are the two learners who found themselves enrolling at Maragon Ruimsig for Grade 00 all the way back in 2005, while Hannah Valkenburg and Tshepiso Billa are the two who enrolled at the school in Grade 0 in 2006. The four all finished inside the Top 10 after matric, with Hannah finishing ninth with an average of 80 per cent, Kyle eighth with 80,28 per cent, Tshepiso second with 86,7 per cent, and finally Nicole, who finished top with an average of 92,28 per cent.

Going forward, Kyle will be taking a gap year in 2019 to enrol in a Bible school in Little Falls which has a four-year course that focuses on Theology. He will be able to do satellite studying though, which is helpful as he hopes to either travel to the USA next year or undertake an internship at an investment company in Pretoria. Looking back on his time at Maragon, Kyle pointed out how special the school’s culture was to him, and just how great it was to see the school grow.
Hannah will be hitting the books straight away, as she’ll be studying towards a Bachelor of Education at the University of Pretoria, after which she is hoping to specialise in special needs education. Coming from a teaching family, Hannah has known ever since Grade 3 that she wanted to study to become a teacher, Foundation Phase in particular. Looking back, Hannah highlighted the matric valediction last year where she was able to speak in front of the school for the final time as head girl.
Nicole will also be heading north to study at Tuks, where she’ll be studying towards a Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Sciences, ultimately hoping to obtain her honours as well. Nicole has always had a passion for numbers and maths, and so it was natural for her to pick the career path she aims to pursue. Nicole will also be looking to take part in some of the drama clubs at Tuks, as she also shares a passion for drama and acting. Looking back, Nicole is grateful for being able to witness the way that the school has grown, to be able to go through it all with the school.
Finally, Tshepiso will be the only one of the three heading to the Cape where she will attend the University of Stellenbosch to study towards a Bachelor of Commerce in Law. Tshepiso’s ultimate goal is to become an advocate, a lengthy process which could take up to 10 years to achieve. Tshepiso grew up with parents who were politically driven in their youth, and naturally shares an interest in student politics. Reflecting on her time at Maragon, Tshepiso also pointed out the school’s growth and culture, saying that every happy moment stands out for her.
