Murder suspect among huge number of weekend arrests

Maja explained how a 25-year-old was arrested for alleged murder during one operation in Roodepoort.

A total of 167 suspects were arrested during intensified operations held by the men and women in blue in the Johannesburg West Cluster this past weekend.

According to the Cluster spokesperson, Captain Makgowanyana Maja, the suspects were arrested for various crimes ranging from murder, housebreaking, common robbery, theft, and house robbery, to possession of suspected drugs, possession of stolen motor vehicles, and hijacking. The total also included 52 drunk drivers who were arrested during the multi-disciplinary roadblocks.

Maja explained how a 25-year-old was arrested for alleged murder during one operation in Roodepoort. “It is alleged that during the afternoon of Friday, 11 January, the police were called to the corner of Van Der Linde Street in Roodepoort. On their arrival, they were shown a plastic bag containing human flesh. Next to the bag was a driver’s licence,” he said.

He added, “Preliminary investigations led the members to a house where they came across the gruesome sight of a pool of blood. They started to search the house in the presence of the alleged suspect and discovered human body parts. The alleged suspect was immediately placed under arrest for murder”.

Maja said the motive for the killing was not yet known as the investigation is continuing.

All the suspects nabbed during the operations appeared in various Magistrates’ Courts on Monday, 14 January, after formally being charged.
