Adhere to these drone regulations or face the consequences

Violate the laws and you might end up with a fine or even prison time.

Drone-flying has become all the rage in the recent years but for many it is a thorn in their side.

This past week residents from Roodekrans have complained about a drone pilot’s antics, who according to one complainant made him feel ‘violated’. The South African Civil Aviation Authority has passed legislation that recreational drone pilots are required to adhere to. Violate them and you might end up with a fine or even prison time. In layman’s terms they mean the following:

• You may not fly a drone:

– near a manned aircraft;

– 10km or closer to an airport, helipad or airport;

– that weighs more than 7kg;

– near crime scenes, courts, prisons, power stations, SANparks parks

or National Key Points.

• You have to keep your drone at least 50m away from:

– any person or groups of people;

– public roads;

and property if you do not have the owner’s permission.

• A drone can not be used to deliver any type of goods.
