A portion of Honeydew could have had a power outage on Monday night, 7 January, if a local security company did not stop a cable-theft attempt.
Stryka Security officers pounced on three suspects at about 8.30pm.
According to a report by the company, they received a call from their client alerting them about someone hiding behind a bush along the road and asked them to investigate.

“Our pro action team was dispatched immediately. Upon arrival the team quickly assessed the situation and tracked down the suspects, only to find that there were three and not one. The three were attempting to steal electricity cables and were caught red-handed,” the report read.
The officers received backup from Honeydew Police and other security services in the area.
Cable theft is a serious concern in the Honeydew area. The stolen cables are used primarily to electrify informal settlements illegally; if not they are sold as scrap material.
Superintendent Wandile Mrubata of the Johannesburg Metro Police encourages residents and security companies to report incidents of cable theft to them. Alternatively, report it to City Power on 011 490 7000 or the police on 10111.
