Tips to help Grade 12s who failed
A learner’s attitude toward a class or subject area is vitally important.
While some 2018 Grade 12 learners were jumping for joy after receiving their pass marks, others had to deal with the shock of failing Grade 12.
Here are a few tips to turn academic failure into success.
1. Bulk up daily study time
Those with low grades in one or more subjects should implement a daily study plan that includes an additional 30 to 45 minutes study time for the subject area(s) of concern.
2. Use every resource
During the designated study time, focus on learning the important vocabulary or formulas. When experiencing difficulty understanding a key concept or formula, the key is to stop and find help. There is no shortage of academic resources to turn to online. Finding a new, different explanation of a concept or approach to a problem can make all the difference.
3. Ask for and accept help
Learners should ask any academically stellar friends or the teacher to help them with any concepts they have trouble with. Those who experience difficulty in one or more subjects may not be asking enough questions and may avoid asking for help from teachers and peers due to shyness or embarrassment.
4. Embrace pre-learning
Pre-reading and pre-learning the terms and concepts prior to the challenging class can help the learner master more of the content. Pre-learning is helpful because it provides foundational knowledge, which will help increase understanding.
5. Do an end-of-day review
At the end of each school day learners benefit from reviewing their class notes for a minimum of 10 minutes for each subject. Reviewing class notes every day helps learners retain more of the day’s lesson.
6. Reread difficult material
Learners should make notes of any leaning concept or formula they do not understand and then reread the information multiple times to help improve their knowledge. Reading the material multiple times can help the learner to learn about key concepts they may have missed when they first read the material.
7. Adjust the attitude
A learner’s attitude towards a class or subject area is vitally important. If they believe they have no talent for a subject area, this may affect their learning ability. Even if learners had failed a subject, they still can relearn the content.
8. Prep for tests
Learners benefit from studying for tests and quizzes every evening for at least a week in advance of the exam. The additional study and review time gives the brain time to commit the learning concepts from the short-term memory to the long-term memory.
9. Retake difficult subjects
Retaking difficult subjects can help learners fill in their learning gaps. Typically, the second time one takes the same class is easier because the learner has some foundational knowledge to build on.
Learners who have experienced academic failure can learn methods to help them overcome their learning challenges. Turning low and failing grades into pass marks takes work and effective educational methods and solutions. Learners who have failed one or more subjects can learn how to succeed and relearn unmastered material. Effort paired with proven educational solutions can make academic achievers out of the most unlikely candidates.
