The unselfish act of a Dunmar security guard ensured that a Horison family’s beloved pet received a new lease on life.
According to Chris Botha, they received a call from one of the Horison Blockwatch (HBW) patrollers regarding a dog that fell into an open manhole on Raath Street. “We heard the call on the radio at approximately 6am on 2 January, and I did not think twice before going out to try and help. I took a ladder with me and informed the SPCA about the incident,” he said.
He found the dog at the bottom of the manhole and it was quite frantic. “The SPCA staff took a while before arriving, and in an attempt to alleviate the dog’s stress, I climbed down the ladder into the manhole and rescued the dog. Ace was very happy to see his owners, who were not only thankful, but also very relieved,” Chris said.
Chris said he helped the dog because he loves animals, “When I heard that we had an emergency situation, it did not matter to me whether an animal or a human was in distress. I just wanted to help.”
Lukas Meyer from the HBW explained, “The cover of that particular manhole was first stolen in November. After reporting it, the municipality replaced it. Not long afterwards it was stolen again, resulting in this incident. We are very grateful to Chris who went out of his way to help the family, as this story could have had such a different ending.”
He added that the missing cover was again reported to the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA). “They secured the area with danger tape in the meantime until the cover can be replaced.”
Missing manhole covers can be reported to the JRA on 0860 56 28 74 or by sending an email to hotline@jra.org.za.
