Locals share their plans for holidays

As the festive season builds momentum, holidaymakers have started utilising the various holiday or chill-out destinations around Roodepoort, if not the West Rand. A Northsider journalist visited a couple of famous hang-out spots in the area including the Botanical Garden to find out what they would be up to this festive season.

Jiv Marsh, who was born here but currently resides in Canada, shared her experience in the Garden and what she’ll be doing during the holidays. “What I love about the Garden is the stunning waterfall and sight-seeing in the garden. For the holidays, I will be in Cape Town with my family, and swimming in the ocean.”

Bryce Engelbrecht, who was at the Garden hoping to see eagles, said he’s expecting visitors from overseas this year. “This year I will be home-sitting because I’m having some family members from Canada visiting for the holidays.”

Molly Matlotlo, who enjoys quiet and chilled vibes, said, “I won’t be partying this year and I hope to spend some quality time with my friends and do some catching up”.

Thapelo Tselapdi preferred to be choosy with whom he spends his time with during the holidays, “These holidays I want to play it by ear and be very picky about who I spend my time with”.

Silence Mashavha, a pianist, predicts a very busy festive season for himself. “I will be quite busy this festive season because of the line-up of gigs that I have such as playing at conferences and other similar events.”

Mike Newton, who took two Indian nationals Abhinav Singh and Shubham Mehta for a tour around the Garden, explained why he chose the Garden as a chill-out destination for the duo. “I chose the Garden because it’s the nearest green place in Joburg for me. I didn’t want to take them to the shopping centres and the city”. The duo appreciated the amazing offerings that the Garden has. Abhinav said, “I like natural places. I find it amazing to see nature in its perfect form”.
