Randburg Shotokan Academy honours top 2018 students
The awards recognised the Academy's very best from throughout the year.
Randburg Shotokan Academy honoured its top karatekas of 2018 at a special awards ceremony held on Saturday, 8 December at Leap Nursery School.
2018 has been a big year for the Academy, as they have seen the number of karatekas grow significantly, to the point where the Academy has more than doubled in size since their move to Honeydew Ridge. This has also, in turn, improved the quality of the karate at the Academy as students find themselves having to work extra hard to keep up with the high standards set by not only the sensei, Prishen Pillay, but by the other students as well.
The Academy decided to have an awards ceremony to honour those who excelled throughout the year. Every student received a special certificate for completing the year, but only 11 were awarded with special individual trophies for their outstanding work.

The ceremony started with the awarding of the trophy for the most outstanding students in the youngest group, called Play Karate. It went to Aimee and Hanna Jackman. Next up were the awards for the Best Beginners, with the male prize going to Sheil Naicker, and the female prize to Nikira Naicker.
From there, the Junior Male Student of the Year was shared between Tyrese Chetty and Vaishav Dayaram, while the Junior Female Student of the Year went to Saranya Bauchoo.
For his phenomenal year, which saw him get his Junior First Dan, Jordan Samuels was named the Senior Male Student of the Year. Julie Hermans received the award for the Senior Female Student of the Year. Yannika Govender was handed the Inspiration Award while Priyal Venkadu was named as the Best Kumite Student.
Last was the announcement of the National Student of the Year, which went to Jean-Claude Hermans, who had an impeccable 2018 that saw him earn his first dan black belt.
