MAP: Unsafe roads closed for rehabilitation in Ruimsig

Road users will be notified in due course when rehabilitation works will commence.

Pierre Road, Alec Street and Short Street in Ruimsig have been barricaded and closed to due to safety concerns noted by Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA).

JRA announced that these routes were closed immediately after identifying the need to rehabilitate a major culvert infrastructure over the stream which is currently unsafe for both vehicles and pedestrians.

According to a routine bridge inspection that was done to determine the condition of the structure, it was discovered the road reserve on the downstream side is crumbling and unstable; there are severe cracks on the road and it can be assumed that the base does not adequately support the surface layer; the inadequate support cannot handle the vehicular and pedestrian loads that it would normally endure, rendering the culvert unsafe for use. The erosion of the embankment has resulted in the sides becoming unstable with a possibility of local collapse, which would be a safety risk and could compromise the roadway.

The finding resulted in the closure of the road due to its imminent collapse. JRA managing director, Goodwill Mbatha, said that the closure will be in force until March 2020 when the culvert will be repaired.

He added that road users will be notified in due course when rehabilitation works will commence.

“A traffic detour plan will be put in place to collect traffic on Pierre Road for residents travelling to Ruimsig AH. Motorists are urged to adhere to traffic guidelines and signage,” he said.

“The JRA apologises to all road users for any inconvenience that may be caused as a result of these repairs and rehabilitation work,” Mbatha concluded.
