Idols turns young girls into old women

Felicia Jones from Roodepoort writes:

I wish to voice my concern regarding the Youth of South Africa.

“What has Idols got to do with it?” you may ask. I am deeply concerned about this platform where young people are allowed to showcase their talent. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, because we have extremely talented young people. I am very grateful for this exceptional opportunity that gifted young people are given.

However, I would like to appeal to, in fact implore, Idols, the decision-makers, producers and anyone else of significance, to reconsider and change the age limit for participants … please!!

I feel that the competition and auditions should not be open to children that are still at school.

Once they have completed Grade 12, and they wish to pursue a career in singing, then that should be their prerogative.

My reasons are as follows:–

1. They are not emotionally mature enough to focus on such a huge responsibility/ commitment in the event that they are chosen to go further.

2. They must complete their schooling career uninterrupted as well as have absolutely no distractions, especially of such magnitude. (We do know that a matric certificate is a minimum requirement for a job or further studies).

3. This is my biggest concern. When I watch Idols, I observe the participants. The younger ones are still so pure and innocent … this is my impression. At this point I wish to draw your attention to two girls in particular: Paxton and Yanga.

Last year, Paxton won. This year, Yanga is the youngest, and she stands a great chance of winning.

When I watched a musical show last night, i.e. Channel O, Paxton was singing. I was deeply saddened by what I saw. Something, or someone, has changed this beautiful young lady drastically. My question … is this how becoming the South African Idol robs you of your youthfulness and makes you a woman overnight?

I am focusing on these two girls because Paxton was in Grade 11 last year and Yanga is in Grade 11 this year. Their attribute of humility is extremely attractive … besides their incredible voices. This, in my opinion, i e. their humble attitudes, makes them winners already!

I would like to suggest [that we] let our children wait just a little while longer … and once they have completed their schooling … then allow them to audition for Idols. Please!!!!
