WATCH: Illegal fishermen busted fishing

JMPD’s Superintendent Wandile Mrubata told Northsider that during their site visit they managed to pounce on six illegal fishermen on Monday, 26 November.

Following complaints about illegal fishing and netting at the Ruimsig Dam, Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) has finally succeeded in busting illegal anglers while fishing.

JMPD’s Superintendent Wandile Mrubata told Northsider that during their site visit on Monday, 26 November they managed to pounce on six illegal fishermen.

“I attended to the complaint of illegal fishing behind Ruimsig Stadium. On arrival, I found six males busy fishing and we chased them away and ordered them to return the fish in the dam,” Mrubata confirmed.

He added that officers will continue to monitor the dam as he speculated that the illegal fishing takes places any time of the day.

Ward 97 PR councillor, Ralf Bittkau, recently stated that he has no problem with people from the informal settlement who catch fish to take home; however, they need to be educated about the size of fish they can go for. “They should not catch the small or the very big fish, because we want the small ones to grow and the big ones to breed,” he urged.

However, Bittkau’s biggest concern was netting, an illegal act which reduces the amount of fish significantly, of which he wants to be curbed.

The community is requested to report any illegalities at the dam to JMPD on 011 036 7502 or to Bittkau on 084 572 4002.
