I am writing as a South African citizen who is deeply concerned at the increase in American and European hunters who visit my country for canned lion hunting.
This practice is both cruel and cowardly and there is zero hunting skill involved. These lions are raised for the express purpose of being slaughtered, and are often from a closed gene pool, which results in many birth defects. The lion is displayed in a sealed area, and is usually drugged to prevent any danger to the “brave” hunter.
The lion is then shot at leisure with a high-power rifle. What kind of human being derives pleasure from killing a majestic animal that cannot defend itself, or run away? I believe that real men do not have to boost their egos by engaging in this cowardly practice.
Please, America and Europe; try to dissuade your citizens from visiting my country for this purpose. There are many more enjoyable and eco-friendly ways to indulge in our beautiful country. Take back video memories of our outstanding wildlife, instead of a moth-eaten trophy or rug.
