Ambulance caused a fatal crash
The City’s EMS was unaware of that the ambulance had been driven out of the workshop by the workshop’s employee and no permission.
A fatal accident recently occurred on Main Reef Road, heading towards Chamdor, when a City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (CoJ EMS) ambulance collided with a male pedestrian.
According to the MMC for Public Safety, councillor Michael Sun, the ambulance had been booked into a workshop, operated by the City’s external service provider, during late October, due to an unusual noise coming from the locking differential.
The interim investigation has indicated that an unauthorised employee of the workshop took the ambulance for a drive and caused the accident.

No one at the CoJ EMS was aware that the ambulance had been driven out of the workshop by the workshop’s employee and no permission had been given for the employee to use the ambulance whatsoever.
Michael Sun said, “We are shocked to hear the news of the killing of a pedestrian as a result of the unauthorised driving of the CoJ EMS ambulance by a workshop employee. When we appoint service providers to repair and maintain our ambulances and patrol cars, we trust that they will conduct themselves with the highest level of professionalism and care when handling our vehicles. We will leave no stone unturned and will get to the bottom of this tragedy”.
He also added that, “The Executive Mayor, Herman Mashaba, called me as soon as he heard the news. We wish to express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. We will be visiting the family members and will extend the City’s assistance where we can”.
A criminal case has been opened and an investigation is under way.
