Ten youth-led projects that are positively impacting their communities were recently funded at the Monash South Africa Leading Entrepreneurs for African Development (MSA LEAD) programme.
This is a fellowship programme for young social entrepreneurs between the ages of 16 and 30 who receive assistance to develop much-needed skills, and are given access to additional resources and the opportunity to learn from and collaborate with one another to drive meaningful, dynamic, and measurable change.
Among the recipients was local soccer club founder (Golden Drifters) and youth development coach, Proud Shoko, from Zandspruit. He managed to win the hearts of the judges which consisted of 21 corporate leaders, entrepreneurs, MSA alumni and academics with his pitch.

Each of the winning projects received $2000, which is equivalent to R28 089,80, to support their work. The fellows (recipients) also participate in advanced training during a week-long workshop covering topics such as leadership development, project management and communications, which features the following experts: MSA Lead fellow 2016, Koketso Mbewe, the co-founder of Youth Leadership Investment Network; Gail Styger, founder and trustee of The WOt-IF? Trust; Zamantungwa Khumalo, supplements and special projects editor at Mail & Guardian; Lucky Litelu, founder and CEO of ICRD Group Holdings and Malilomo Nkhabu, MSA community engagement coordinator, and Masters candidate in environment and society at the University of Pretoria.
The programme will also feature ongoing learning and mentoring opportunities throughout the fellowship year.
