Community thwarts attempted hijacking

Suspects arrested within 10 minutes.

Yesterday at about 3pm the swift action of the community and neighbourhood watch led to the arrest of two alleged hijackers.

Owner of Dynamic Kids on Moller Street, Louise Caoete, saw a mother on CCTV stumbling into the premises of the crèche and realised something was wrong. She immediately called the West Suburbs Roodepoort Neighbourhood Watch (WSRNW).

What transpired is that when the mother came to fetch her two kids she was accosted by the two men. They told her to give them her keys but she refused. She ran to the crèche and started screaming, which attracted the attention of community members.

Community and WSRNW members gave chase and one of the alleged assailants was arrested after being tackled. The second suspect was found hiding in a nearby marsh and was also arrested. The men were tied up and Roodepoort Police arrived shortly afterwards.

It is suspected that the men threw away a firearm while running away.

Caoete said they are now in the process of placing a permanent guard outside the crèche.
