On Thursday, 8 November, Helderkruin Clinic held an Open Day to raise awareness about the services they render.
The public was invited to be screened for Tuberculosis (TB), high blood pressure, sugar diabetes, hypertension and prostate cancer. Women were also urged to do a Pap smear test, because it is the best way to find cervical cancer early.
Ward 85 councillor, Sonja Meyer, also visited the clinic to do her screening. She spoke to the public about the importance of child immunisation. “Mothers, it is important to bring your child to the clinic for immunisation because it prevents them from becoming ill with unpleasant and serious infectious diseases, which have a risk of complications and long-term side effects. Until these diseases are eradicated, every child that is not immunised is at risk of complications if they catch the actual infectious disease itself. Complications such as ear infections, pneumonia and in rare cases, measles, encephalitis and more,” she said.
The operational manager at the clinic, Sister Thembi Shangisa, advises the community to live a healthy life by not smoking, avoiding drugs and excessive alcohol, eating five portions of fruit and vegetables daily, and exercising regularly (30 minutes a day). This will help them to avoid lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.
“We are a municipal primary health care facility providing HIV and TB-related treatment, care and support services. We have a community-oriented primary health care programme that monitors and proactively works towards the improved health and well-being of families in our area. We are an accredited anti-retroviral (ARV) treatment initiation and on-going treatment site. We provide home-based care services for sick people and support for their vulnerable family members,” Sister Thembi said.
