Wilro Park businesswoman scoops prestigious award

'I am extremely humbled and honoured to have received this award'

Local businesswoman and entrepreneur, Ronél Harris scooped yet another prestigious award at the annual Margaret Hirsch Women in Business Achiever Awards 2018.

Ronél was crowned as the Strubens Valley branch winner at the gala event that took place at Emperors Palace. The theme for the evening was African Queen, and, in line with this theme, the more than 500 attendees had the opportunity to listen to Melanie Hawken (Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Lionesses of Africa and a Champion of Africa’s Women entrepreneurs).

The evening’s entertainment was supplied by the cabaret queen, Sasha Le Strange.

The competition was started by Margaret Hirsch, Chief Operations Officer of Hirsch’s Homestores, six years ago, after she had won quite a number of awards herself, and she said, “Awards give credibility to one’s business, but as women, we tend to shy away from being in the limelight and are often not assertive enough. This was my way of encouraging women to put themselves – and their businesses – in the spotlight.”

After receiving the award, Ronél said, “I am extremely humbled and honoured to have received such a prestigious award and to be a representative of the Roodepoort area. To my fellow nominees, each and everyone of you are winners in your own right and deserve this title just as much as I do.”

She added that the award made everything worthwhile and said, “I am grateful for the recognition, and would like to thank all my supporters who have believed in me throughout my journey. To my friends; thank you for staying by my side through all my trials and tribulations. I also want to thank my family for all their support and love throughout the years.”

Other winners on the evening were:

• Dr Tamara Pheiffer (Gauteng Regional winner of the Margaret Hirsch Woman in Business of the Year Award)

• Pamela Niemand (Runner-up)

• Amukelani Mashele (Runner-up)

The Branch winners were:

• Kathryn Main (Fourways)

• Sister Jenny (Silverlakes)

• Carmen Mocke (Centurion)

• Angela James (Meadowdale)

• Lily Mhlangu (Brakpan)

She concluded by thanking Margaret and her panel of judges for recognising women for the work they do – both in the community and the business world – and said, “For a number of years I have observed how many women go from strength to strength in business as a result of the inspiration and upliftment offered by industry leaders such as Margaret Hirsch.”
