“Safety remains a key concern for many of our residents. Though policing remains a provincial and national competency, as per the Constitution and within its limited mandate, the JMPD are working hard to increase the levels of safety within our communities,” said Mashaba.
Some of the high level statistics include 38 arrests for possession of illegal firearms and ammunition (10 firearms were recovered); 21 for fraud (false vehicle discs); 79 for drug-related offences; 35 for vehicle theft; 2 038 for driving under the influence and 39 for reckless and negligent driving.
“With respect to operations conducted by the JMPD’s K9 Narcotics Tactical Unit, 37 stolen vehicles were recovered during the month of September, bringing the total number of recovered vehicles to 138 since the month of July.
“With respect to Operation Buya Mthetho, the JMPD conducted 25 visible policing operations within bad buildings between the months of July to September, with 12 arrests made. In addition to this, during the same period, a total of 670 vehicles were impounded through operations for detecting unroadworthy taxis and other vehicles. The City has also issued 200 201 Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offence Infringement (Aarto) notices for the month of September,” said Mashaba.
