Environment taken care of during clean-up

Brand said, “It was wonderful to have the community and school children on the streets cleaning the area”.

The beauty of Ward 126 in Allen’s Nek was restored when the community, with councillor David Brand and learners from Allen High School, cleaned up the area on 20 October.

The clean-up, which covered areas surrounding the school, was part of the City’s A Re Sebetseng clean-up campaign which was introduced by the City of Johannesburg Mayor, Herman Mashaba, when he took office.

The School Governing Body chairperson, Warren Mckrill, who was proud to see some learners and staff turn up for the initiative, told the Northsider that the clean-up was part of the school’s way of reclaiming the community. “Following the incident in which some of our learners were knocked down, which went viral, we’ve decided to reclaim our community and take pride in it, and that begins with us and the community,” he explained.

The scope of the clean-up included pulling up weeds on pavements, picking up litter, cutting overgrowth and removing illegal signage.

Brand said, “It was wonderful to have the community and school children of the streets cleaning the area”.

He also said that it would have been nice to have the fast food supplier close to the school assisting on the day. “I noted that most of the garbage, from drinking cups to hamburger containers, came from his company. It would have been a nice token from him to send one or two of his guys to assist with the clean-up,” Brand concluded.
