Of the detained couple, the female had been convicted of shoplifting in August which raises the question of what the sentences for shoplifting are. According to a law expert, a genera sentence for a first-time offender would be a stiff fine or community work. Should the person offend a second time, for the same offence, they could face short-term imprisonment.
