Allen Glen learners raise the issue of mental health among teens
Mental health is an issue among South Africa's teenagers, but a group of learners is doing its bit to make a difference.
Millions of South African teens suffer from mental health issues, and a group of learners has made a decision to step up and reach out to other young people.
The group, known as the ‘Teen Mental Health Champions’, is made up of eight learners from Allen Glen High School and is at the helm of the B.R.E.A.T.H.E campaign, a mental health awareness facilitated by Auxilium Health. The aim of their campaign is to assist other young individuals to realise their problems and in the process help bring about transformation in the approach to mental issues, as well as remove some of the stigma relating to mental health.

They hope to assist as many young individuals as possible, and have decided to become the spokespersons for their peers. They also hope to facilitate healing and comfort and the ability to speak freely about mental health issues for all young people in South Africa and the world at large by leading this campaign.
The campaign follows a performance based on a poem on mental health titled Movie Theatres, which was written by one of the Teen Mental Health Champions, Khanyisile Mabasa. Khanyisile narrates the poem while her fellow Champions give a choreographed performance with the help of Caitlin Swanepoel of CDF Worx.
