Irvette van Zyl storms to blistering win

She won the race in a time of 34 minutes and 57 seconds

Irvette van Zyl led from start to finish to win the Joburg Spar Women’s 10km Challenge in a very quick time of 34 minutes and seven seconds.

The Joburg leg of the race took place on 7 October at Marks Park where more than 13 000 eager runners and walkers took to the streets of Emmarentia to enjoy the somewhat hot 5km and 10km races.

Irvette (Nedbank) stormed to the front right from the start and never relinquished her lead, although Kesa Moletsane (KPMG) appeared to threaten from time to time, but Irvette just kept going at a blistering pace.

“I was a bit over-eager at the start, and by the six-kilometre mark, my legs were feeling very tired. I went out hard at the beginning because I knew the second half was quite tricky. I was running on my own, which is never easy, but I am very happy with the win,” she said.

She added that LJ, her husband, was away for 10 days, leaving her to look after the two little ones on her own, resulting in her having very little sleep.

Irvette has been in the form of her life in recent weeks after giving birth to her second son 15 weeks ago, winning the 10km Peace Run at the Cape Town Marathon on 23 September, and the FNB Joburg City Run the following day.

Irvette van Zyl crosses the finish line in 34:07 minutes to win the SPAR Women’s Joburg Challenge run at Marks Park Sports Club.

Marathon runner, Gerda Steyn (Nedbank), who competed in her first Challenge Race, was in fourth position for the better part of the race, but shot past Glenrose Xaba (Boxer) and Kesa in the final kilometre to snatch second place in a time of 34 minutes and 57 seconds.

Kesa finished third in a time of 34 minutes and 59 minutes and Glerose came in fourth in a time of 35 minutes and five seconds.
