Witness claims he knows cause of accident
Cane chairs were blown off bakkie.
A motorist by the name of Ruan Joubert said he knows what probably caused the horror accident on Tuesday, 16 October, on the N1 North, which led to authorities closing all four lanes close to peak time traffic.
Joubert was travelling to Midrand on a work errand when he saw a bakkie transporting a number of cane chairs. Two of the chairs came loose and blew off the back of the bakkie. The driver stopped in order to retrieve the chairs, which were lying in one of the lanes.

It was then that the driver of a light utility vehicle had to slam on his brakes to avoid hitting the chairs. This caused the vehicles behind him to also perform emergency stops, which led to four vehicles colliding.
Joubert said he then noticed the driver and his female companion driving off. He immediately jumped into his vehicle and gave chase. He managed to pull them over at the William Nicol Drive on-ramp and confronted them about why they had left the scene, to which they answered that “they had nothing to do with the accident”. Joubert disagreed and insisted that they return to the scene to at least make a statement.
“I believe that their chairs ending up on the highway, and the vehicle driver who had to slam on his brakes in order to avoid them, led directly to the accident,” said Joubert.
