Crèche’s – Beware of this new crime tactic
Video footage of incident handed to the police.
A fourth similar case of scamsters targeting small businesses has been reported to the administrators of the Witpoortjie Warnings Whatsapp group.
Last Friday, 12 October, a man and woman entered a crèche (the owner and police asked the Record not to divulge the crèche’s name or address for safety reasons). The couple, well dressed, told the receptionist that they were interested in enrolling their child in the crèche and asked for a tour of the facility.

The man then asked the teacher taking them on the tour, if he could use the bathroom. After visiting the bathroom, he asked for a glass of water. The teacher went to fetch him water. At the same time, his partner was distracting the teacher with questions, giving him the opportunity to slip into the principal’s office and steal a cellphone. Although there was also a tablet on the desk, he left this, presumably because it would be more difficult to conceal.
Only later did the principal discover that her phone was gone. Upon viewing the day’s CCTV footage, she realised what had taken place.
