Don van der Merwe, owner of Fatboys 1, was a witness to the whole incident, and visibly shocked, related his version of the events to the Record.
“I was turning into the parking lot of the shopping centre when a blue Golf with four occupants turned in front of me. I was upset, stopped my vehicle and wanted to confront them.
It was then that two of the occupants jumped out of the vehicle, one brandishing a firearm. They grabbed the handbag of one of two women who were either getting into or out of their vehicle,” said Van der Merwe.
“They then turned to the second woman, screaming that she must give them their handbag. She refused and fought back. It was then that one of the man fired a shot at her.
The shot missed her, but ricocheted and hit her friend. The suspects then fled and I rushed over to help her. I kept my hand on her wound trying to stop the bleeding and to calm her down until the emergency services came. It seemed like she would be ok, but I can’t tell for sure,” he explained.
Residents are advised to avoid the area since it is currently a crime scene.
