Be vigilant about Sassa imposters
According to the South African Social Security Agency they have received numerous calls from their beneficiaries about people coming to their areas with unmarked cash vans and claiming to be from Sassa.
According to Paseka Letsatsi, spokesperson for the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) they have received numerous calls from their beneficiaries about people coming to their areas with unmarked cash vans and claiming to be from Sassa.
These imposters allegedly ask beneficiaries to swipe their cards as many as three times in an effort to maximise bank charges.
Letsatsi wishes to inform the public that the Sassa cash payments done through the South African Post Office (SAPO) will only start from 8 October; anyone posing as Sassa and promising to pay before 8 October is a fraud.

Cash payments will in future be on the eighth of every month and will be facilitated by SAPO. In the past electronic payments done through the post office, ATMs and merchants were done from the first of every month. From now on all electronic payments will start the day before first of the month.
“Beneficiaries are requested to avoid requesting receipts when doing balance enquiries at ATMs and should rather view their balances on the ATM screen, to avoid unnecessary bank charges. They should also keep their PINs secret and not disclose them to anyone, including the Sassa officials,” explained Letsatsi.
She sais Sassa wants to inform beneficiaries that it does not endorse any financial institution or their cards. According to her there is only one Sassa card and it is gold in colour with a Sassa and government emblem at the top on either side. Any other card without these features is not a Sassa card.
A beneficiary has the right to change their method of payment from either a bank card to a Sassa card or the other way around. If a beneficiary wants to receive their grant through a card other than the Sassa card, they have to provide Sassa with a request for bank payment form. This form is available from banks, Sassa offices and https://www.sassa.gov.za.
