Greenbelt gate to be locked a bit earlier
The gate could soon be locked an hour earlier following the shooting incident.
The access-controlled pedestrian gate in the greenbelt bordering Witwaterand and Christiaan de Wet Roads in Strubens Valley might have new closure times following the shooting of a security officer by a suspect in the afternoon of 4 October.

A BCI Security personnel was performing his duty of locking the gate which is mostly used by domestics as a shortcut to Strubens Valley through the greenbelt when he was approached by the suspect wearing blue overalls and fired two shots at him.
“The suspect then shot our officer twice in the stomach at point blank range. His bulletproof stopped the bullets and he managed to fire shots back at the suspect,” Gary Jordaan, the company’s media liaison unpacked the incident.
The officer was left shocked but checked by ER24 medics. “We are thankful that his bulletproof vest did its job and that he is alive,” said Gary.
The company confirmed that a case of attempted murder was opened at Honeydew Police Station.
The day after the incident, BCI personnel Rudi Holtzhausen and Arno Dorfling returned to the scene to search for evidence which would bring them closer to the wanted suspect.
According to Rudi’s speculation, the suspect was either waiting at the gate for the officer or looking to rob pedestrians and residences.
He further said that the gate, which is regularly locked at 6pm, will have to be locked an hour earlier for safety reasons.
